Measure your dog at the widest point, usually the chest or shoulders, and choose a flap at least a couple of inches wider. Then measure from the floor to the top of the shoulders: once installed, the top of the flap opening should sit a little above that line so your dog doesn't have to duck. Keep the step-over (the bottom of the opening) low enough for your smallest or oldest dog. If you have two dogs, size for the bigger one. Browse large dog doors or small dog doors.
Single flaps let drafts through. In Texas heat or northern winters, look for insulated, multi-flap doors with magnetic seals, such as the Security Boss MaxSeal line or the PetSafe Extreme Weather doors. Weather stripping, high-wind magnets and a draft sealer for sliding glass doors help an existing door seal better. Read how to weatherproof a dog door and the best dog door for cold weather.
Choose a door that locks: most Security Boss models include a locking cover or security panel, and patio panels can be locked in the track. A door sized to your dog rather than oversized is harder to get through, and a wall install can go somewhere out of sight. The SB72 line is built bite-resistant for dogs that chew. We stock replacement flaps, magnets, weather stripping, security panels, wall tunnel inserts and patio door extensions for Security Boss, Lakeside and PetSafe doors. Shop them all in dog door parts & accessories.

Yes. A patio panel dog door fits into the track of your sliding glass door next to the sliding panel, so nothing is cut and you can take it with you when you move. Measure the full height of the track before ordering; extensions are available for taller doors. See dog doors for sliding doors.
A dog door is an opening, so choose one that locks. Most Security Boss models have a locking cover or security panel, and you can lock patio panels in the track. Size the door to your dog rather than larger, and consider a wall install out of view. Read are dog doors safe?
Look for an insulated door with more than one flap and magnetic seals, such as the Security Boss MaxSeal line or the PetSafe Extreme Weather doors. Wall installs with a sealed tunnel also block drafts better than a single flap in a hollow door.
Most handy owners can. You'll need to locate studs, wiring and plumbing, cut the opening, and fit the tunnel to your wall thickness (trim-to-fit tunnel inserts are available). If you're unsure, a handyman can usually do it in a few hours. See dog doors for walls.
Basic flap doors start around $35. Most Security Boss door, wall and patio models run about $160 to $450, and extra-large insulated wall doors reach about $900. Installation, tunnel extensions and glass work (for in-glass doors) are extra.
MaxSeal doors are Security Boss's insulated, weather-sealed line, built for extreme temperatures. Standard doors cost less and suit milder climates. Both come in door, wall and glass versions; text us your climate and your dog's size and we'll suggest one.
