Insulated Dog Doors

An insulated dog door lets your dog in and out without letting winter in. The doors below use insulated flaps, dual or triple flap systems and magnetic seals to block drafts, wind and heat loss, and most lock with a security panel. You'll find Security Boss MaxSeal and SB72 models for exterior doors, walls, glass and sliding doors, a storm door model, an insulated kennel door, and PetSafe Extreme Weather 3-flap doors.

Insulated dog door buying guide: what to look for, which model fits your home, and how to stop drafts

What to look for in an insulated dog door

  • More than one flap. A dual flap (or the PetSafe 3-flap system) traps air between the flaps, which insulates far better than a single sheet of vinyl.
  • Insulated flap material. The SB72 and SB72W use an aluminum-clad flap with a polycarbonate air-cell core; the Kennel Clad uses a polypropylene air-cell core.
  • A tight seal. Magnets along the flap and frame, plus weather stripping, keep the flap closed against wind. On the MaxSeal the magnets are adjustable, and on the SB72 the weather stripping is replaceable.
  • A locking panel. Sliding the security panel in at night or during a storm closes the opening completely.
  • The right size. A door far bigger than your dog lets in more air. Choose a flap a little wider than your dog's widest point and 1.5" to 2" taller than their shoulders.

MaxSeal PRO or SB72?

Both are Security Boss's insulated, lockable doors, handmade in the USA. Choose the SB72 / SB72W if your dog chews the flap or you live where winters drop below -40°F, since its flap is clad in aluminum. Choose the MaxSeal PRO for most indoor-outdoor dogs: it comes in more sizes (from Small to Behemoth) and offers single or dual flaps for doors, walls and glass.

Tips to keep drafts out

  • Pick a dual flap if your winters are cold or windy.
  • Add the High Wind Neo Magnet Set or a Rain Guard on a windy side of the house.
  • For a wall install, seal the tunnel to the wall and use the tunnel carpet lining.
  • Check and replace worn weather stripping and flaps before winter.
  • Lock the security panel at night when your dog doesn't need to go out.

Insulated Dog Doors FAQs

What makes a dog door insulated?

Three things: flaps that hold heat (a foam or air-cell core instead of a single thin vinyl sheet), more than one flap so there's an air gap between inside and outside, and a tight seal around the edges from magnets and weather stripping. The Security Boss MaxSeal and SB72 doors and the PetSafe Extreme Weather doors in this collection are all built that way.

Single flap or dual flap: which is better for cold weather?

Dual flap. A second flap traps a layer of air between the inside and outside flaps, which cuts drafts and heat loss. Security Boss offers single or dual flap on the MaxSeal PRO door, wall and in-glass models; the PetSafe Extreme Weather doors use three flaps. A single flap costs less and is fine in milder climates.

What is the best dog door for extreme cold?

For temperatures well below zero, Security Boss built the SB72 (doors) and SB72W (walls) for far northern climates where it drops below -40°F. Their flaps are clad in aluminum over an insulated core, with rare earth magnets and replaceable weather stripping. The MaxSeal PRO with dual flaps is the other strong choice and comes in more sizes.

Can I put an insulated dog door in a wall?

Yes. The MaxSeal PRO for Walls and the SB72W come with a trim-to-fit tunnel (10" or 16") that you cut to your wall thickness. See all dog doors for walls.

How do I stop wind from blowing my dog door open?

Choose a door with magnetic flaps and a dual flap where offered, then add the Security Boss High Wind Neo Magnet Set or a Rain Guard on the outside. Locking the security panel at night or during storms seals the opening completely.

Do insulated dog doors come in sizes for large dogs?

Yes. The MaxSeal PRO door, wall and in-glass models go up to Behemoth (15.75" x 32"), the SB72 and SB72W up to Mammoth (15" x 24"), and the MaxSeal patio insert up to Mammoth (15" x 24"). See dog doors for large dogs for every large-breed option.
