Whelping Boxes & Whelping Supplies FAQs

What size whelping box do I need?

The box should let the mother lie fully stretched out with room for the litter, plus about a foot to spare. Small breeds need roughly 3 by 3 feet, medium breeds 4 by 4 feet and large breeds 5 by 5 feet or more.

Why do whelping boxes have rails?

Pig rails, the ledge around the inside wall, leave a gap so puppies can't be pressed against the wall when the mother lies down. Check each box's product details to see whether rails are included.

What bedding goes in a whelping box?

Vet fleece and whelping pads stay warm and dry because moisture passes through to an absorbent layer, and they wash easily. Avoid loose blankets that puppies can get trapped under.

When do puppies move to a weaning pen?

Around 3 to 4 weeks, when puppies start walking and exploring, most breeders move them to a larger weaning pen such as the Lakeside Jonart pen, which gives them more space while keeping them contained.
