Dog Doors for Sliding Doors

A dog door for a sliding glass door is a tall panel that fits into your existing patio door track, so there's no cutting glass or walls and nothing permanent. Close the slider against it, lock it, and your dog has a door of their own. Below you'll find lockable Security Boss inserts (including MaxSeal and Giant Breed models) and PetSafe manual and electronic patio doors, plus a quick guide to choosing the right one.

Sliding door dog door buying guide & FAQ: how to measure, pick a size and compare models

How to measure your sliding door

  1. Measure the track height. Open the slider and measure from the top of the bottom track to the inside of the top track. Most patio inserts come in adjustment ranges (for example 70"–77.25" or 77.25"–84.5"), so pick the range your measurement falls inside.
  2. Check which side the slider opens. The panel sits in the track where the moving door closes against it, and it works on either a left- or right-opening door.
  3. Measure your dog. Measure their widest point (usually the shoulders or chest) and their height from the floor to the top of the shoulders. The flap should be about 1–2" wider than their widest point, and its top edge should sit at least 1" above their shoulders.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a dog door in a sliding glass door without cutting?

Yes. Every door in this collection is an insert panel that sits in your existing track, and you remove it by unlocking the slider and lifting it out. That makes these a good fit for renters.

Are sliding door dog doors secure?

All of these models lock. Security Boss inserts include a locking closure panel, and the slider still locks against the panel. Electronic models like the PetSafe Electronic and Security Boss Elite go further: they only open for your pet's collar key or ID disc, which keeps out strays, raccoons and other animals.

Will a patio dog door let in cold air or bugs?

A good insert seals against the track with weatherstripping. For extreme heat or cold, choose a model built for insulation, such as the MaxSeal or a dual-pane door, and pick a dual flap where it's offered.

What size dog door do I need?

Pick a flap 1–2" wider than your dog's widest point, with its top at least 1" above their shoulders. For a puppy, size for their expected adult size.

What if my door height doesn't match any range?

Measure track to track again, since most standard patio doors fall between 77" and 81". If you're still between ranges or have a taller door, contact us and we'll help you find the right fit.

Dog Doors for Sliding Doors FAQs

Do I have to cut my sliding glass door to install a dog door?

No. A patio dog door insert stands in your existing sliding door track, beside the door, and is held in place by tension. Nothing is cut, and it comes out when you move. You can also install a pet door in a new glass pane, but that requires a glass shop.

How do I measure for a patio dog door insert?

Measure the height of the track from the top of the bottom track to the inside of the top track, at several points, and use the smallest number. Then measure your dog's shoulder height and width to choose the flap size. Text a pro at 737-215-3211 with your measurements if you aren't sure.

Are sliding door dog doors secure?

Yes, if you choose a lockable model. Security Boss patio inserts include a locking cover for the flap, and you can add a security bar to the slider. PetSafe electronic panels open only for a dog wearing the matching collar key.

Do patio dog doors let in drafts?

Insulated inserts with weatherstripping and a sealed, magnetic flap cut drafts the most. Security Boss MaxSeal patio inserts are built with insulated, sealed flaps for hot and cold climates.
