Orthopedic & Memory Foam Dog Beds FAQs

What is the difference between an orthopedic and a memory foam dog bed?

Orthopedic beds use thick, supportive foam that keeps joints off the floor. Memory foam is one type of orthopedic fill that contours to your dog's body and spreads out pressure. For senior dogs and dogs with arthritis or hip dysplasia, look for a bed with a thick foam base rather than loose fiber fill.

Does my dog need an orthopedic bed?

Older dogs, large and giant breeds, and dogs recovering from surgery or living with joint pain benefit most, because foam doesn't flatten the way fiber fill does. Young, healthy dogs can use one too, and it often lasts longer than a standard bed.

How do I pick the right size?

Measure your dog lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add 6 to 12 inches. Dogs that curl up can use a slightly smaller bed, while dogs that sprawl need the full length. See our large and XL dog beds for big breeds.

Can I wash an orthopedic dog bed?

Most of our orthopedic beds, including Bowsers and Paw beds, have removable covers that go in the washer. Spot clean the foam itself and let it air dry, because washing foam can break it down.
