How Much Does It Cost to Install a Dog Door? (2026 Price Guide)

Most dog door installations cost $200 to $800 in total, and about $400 is a common average for a medium manual pet door in an exterior door. A simple install in a door can come in under $200, while a large door through a brick wall or a new glass pane can run $1,000 to $2,500 or more.

Below are the price ranges from the major cost guides, what the pet door itself costs, what drives the price up or down, and how to save.

Dog door installation cost at a glance

Where it goes Typical installed cost What makes it cost more
Exterior door $150 to $800 Metal or fiberglass doors, large sizes, electronic doors
Wall $200 to $2,000+ Brick, block or stucco; thick walls; a wider opening that needs framing
Glass or window $350 to $1,300 A new glass pane has to be made with the opening

Sliding glass door (cut-in) $440 to $1,200 New glass panel; insulated glass

Cost by pet door size

Size (flap) Installed cost
Small (about 6" x 7") $150 to $500
Medium (about 8" x 15") $200 to $800
Large (about 10" x 19") $300 to $1,000
Extra large (about 12" x 23") $400 to $1,300+

Labor cost to install a dog door

  • Time: a professional install usually takes 1 to 3 hours (Fixr); HomeGuide says 1 to 4 hours depending on the location.
  • Handyman rates: about $50 to $100 an hour, or a flat $100 to $200 for a simple install (Fixr).
  • Share of the total: HomeAdvisor puts labor at $200 to $1,500, or 40% to 60% of the total job.
  • Electrician: $40 to $120 an hour if an electronic or automatic door needs wiring (Fixr).
  • Glass shop: for in-glass doors, the glass shop's charge for a new pane is part of the cost, because tempered and insulated glass can't be cut after it's made.

What the pet door itself costs

Installed prices above include the door. Here's what you'll pay for the pet door alone at Puppy Fever Pro (prices November 2026):

Type Example Pet door price
Door mount SB Standard, MaxSeal, MaxSeal PRO $181 to $817
Wall mount SB Standard, MaxSeal, MaxSeal PRO $226 to $1,010
In-glass Standard, MaxSeal, MaxSeal PRO $209 to $829 (plus new glass)
Sliding glass door insert Standard, MaxSeal, PRO MaxSeal $373 to $1,243 (no install)
French door glass panel MaxSeal panel and others $1,260 to $1,864 (glass included)
Window insert Lockable window insert $260 to $455 (no install)
Storm door Heavy Duty Storm Door $191 to $489
Screen door or porch Screen Door model, SB4 $134 to $226

Basic plastic flap doors cost less; HomeGuide lists flexible-flap doors from about $20. Insulated, lockable aluminum doors cost more but seal better and last longer.

What affects the price

  1. Location. A door is the easiest place to install a pet door. A wall needs a tunnel, framing and weatherproofing. Glass needs a new pane.
  2. Wall material. Wood-framed walls are the easiest. Brick, block and stucco need masonry tools, so many owners hire a contractor (Fixr lists brick installs at $200 to $2,550).
  3. Size. Large and giant-breed openings cost more to make and may need framing changes in a wall.
  4. Manual or electronic. Fixr puts installed manual doors at $200 to $800 and electric doors at $450 to $2,700.
  5. Insulation and security. Dual flaps, insulated panels and locking covers add to the price but cut drafts and keep the opening secure.
  6. Your area. Labor rates vary by city.

DIY or hire a pro?

Good DIY jobs: a door-mount pet door in a wood or steel door (you need a jigsaw or reciprocating saw, a drill and an hour or two), and any no-cut insert for a sliding door or window. See how to install a dog door in a door and how to put a dog door in a metal door.

Worth hiring out: masonry walls, thick or exterior-finished walls (stucco, brick veneer), anything involving glass, and electronic doors that need wiring. See how to install a dog door in a wall to judge the job before you decide.

6 ways to save on a dog door installation

  1. Choose a no-cut insert. A sliding glass door insert or window insert stands in your track: no installer and nothing to repair later.
  2. Put it in a door, not a wall or glass. It's the cheapest location to install and the easiest to DIY.
  3. Size it right the first time. The top of the flap should be 1.5" to 2" above your dog's shoulders. Buying for the adult size avoids paying twice.
  4. Swap glass instead of cutting. For French doors that fit it, a glass panel with the pet door built in needs no glass shop.
  5. Do it during other work. If you're replacing a door or residing, add the pet door then.
  6. Buy once. A door with replaceable flaps and parts lasts for years. Cheap flaps that crack or blow open cost more over time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a dog door in a wall?

Usually $200 to $2,000 or more installed. Wood-framed walls are at the low end. Brick, block and stucco, thick walls and large openings cost more.

How much does it cost to put a dog door in a glass door?

Roughly $350 to $1,300 for a glass or window install, and $440 to $1,200 for a sliding glass door, because a glass shop makes a new pane with the opening. A no-cut sliding door insert avoids that cost.

Does Home Depot install dog doors?

Big-box stores sell pet doors and may offer installation through local contractors, depending on the store. You can also hire any handyman, glass shop or contractor, or contact us and we'll arrange an installer.

How long does it take to install a dog door?

About 1 to 3 hours for a professional in a door. Walls and glass take longer, and a glass shop may need several days to make a new pane.

Is it worth getting a dog door?

For most dogs that spend time in a yard, yes: your dog can go out on its own, and you aren't on door duty all day. See our dog door pros and cons.
