K9 Advantix II flea and tick treatment for dogs

Advantage II vs K9 Advantix II: What's the Difference? (2026)

Last updated: November 7, 2026

Quick answer: Advantage II for dogs is a flea-only treatment. It kills adult fleas, flea eggs and larvae, and chewing lice, but it does not kill or repel ticks. K9 Advantix II has the same two flea ingredients plus permethrin, so it also kills and repels ticks, mosquitoes and biting flies. The catch: permethrin is toxic to cats. Choose K9 Advantix II if ticks are a concern and you don't have cats in close contact. Choose Advantage II if fleas are the only problem or your dog lives with cats.

Both come from the same family of products, both are monthly spot-ons, and neither needs a prescription. The names are similar enough that people buy the wrong one all the time, so here's the difference in one table.

Why the Extra Ingredient Matters

The only difference is permethrin, and it changes two things:

  • Tick and mosquito protection. Permethrin repels and kills ticks, mosquitoes and biting flies on contact. Ticks can carry Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis and other infections, so if your dog walks in woods, fields or tall grass, that coverage matters. Advantage II does nothing against ticks.
  • Cat safety. Cats can't break down permethrin the way dogs can. Even contact with a freshly treated dog can make a cat seriously ill. That's why the K9 Advantix II label warns "Do not use on cats – may be fatal."

What We Carry

K9 Advantix II flea and tick control for dogs

We carry K9 Advantix Flea and Tick Control for Dogs in small, medium and large dog sizes, in 2-, 4- and 6-month supplies, from $39.99 to $92.99. For long-lasting protection without monthly drops, there's also the Seresto flea and tick collar ($72.25, up to 8 months).

Treating the house matters too: most of a flea population (eggs, larvae and pupae) lives in carpets, bedding and furniture, not on the dog. Wash your dog's bedding in hot water if the label allows, vacuum daily for a couple of weeks and use a home flea spray. See everything in our flea and tick for dogs collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Advantage II the same as K9 Advantix II?

No. They share imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen, but K9 Advantix II adds permethrin for ticks, mosquitoes and biting flies. Advantage II is flea and lice protection only.

Does Advantage II kill ticks?

No. If you need tick protection, choose K9 Advantix II, Frontline Plus or a tick collar such as Seresto.

Can I use K9 Advantix II if I have a cat?

Only with care. Keep cats away from the treated dog for at least 24 hours and never apply it to a cat. If your pets are always together, choose a product without permethrin.

Can I switch from Advantage II to K9 Advantix II?

Yes, many owners switch when tick season starts. Don't apply both in the same month, and ask your vet about timing if you're unsure.

Which works faster on fleas?

Both use imidacloprid to kill adult fleas. K9 Advantix II's label says it kills existing fleas within 12 hours and reinfesting fleas within 2 hours.

Are they waterproof?

Yes. Keep your dog dry for 24 hours after applying either product. After that, both stay effective through baths, swimming and rain.
